Best Scenic Drives in the UK (And What Paint Protection You Actually Need)

If you've got a car worth driving properly, you'll want to take it somewhere decent. The UK's got some good roads once you get away from motorways.

Here's the thing - each type of drive affects your paint differently. So let's go through the best routes and what protection makes sense if you're planning to do these regularly.

The Lake District - Kirkstone Pass & Honister Pass

What You're Getting Into: Steep hills, tight hairpins, views that make you pull over. Genuinely some of the best roads in England. This is why you bought a sports car in the first place.

What Happens to Your Paint: Mountain roads with loose gravel on corners and stones flying up. Tractors, rough tarmac edges, and when you're climbing steep sections your front end catches everything.

What Protection You Need: PPF territory if you're doing this regularly. Especially if you're in something low. Front bumper, bonnet, door sills, mirrors - the usual impact zones. Ceramic coating won't stop a stone at 50mph. PPF will.

If you're only going once or twice a year, you can probably just accept a few chips. But regular Lake District runs, get PPF sorted.

North Coast 500, Scotland

What You're Getting Into: 516 miles around the Scottish Highlands. Single track roads, coastal sections, mountain passes. Basically the UK's version of a proper road trip.

What Happens to Your Paint: Salt spray from the coast, narrow roads where branches can scrape sides, gravel sections, farm vehicles, and midges that bake onto hot paint in summer. It's a long route with constant environmental exposure.

What Protection You Need: If you're taking something expensive, full PPF makes sense. The NC500 is great but it's tough on paintwork.

If full PPF is too much, do the front end with PPF and ceramic coat the rest. Stone protection where it counts plus easier bug cleaning.

Evo Triangle, North Wales

What You're Getting Into: The famous B4501, A543, A5 loop through Snowdonia. Every car magazine tests here. Fast, flowing, technical - proper driving roads.

What Happens to Your Paint: Road surface is better than Lake District but you're going faster. Sheep wander around, gravel gets kicked up on the run-off areas, and there's always debris from other people pushing hard through there.

What Protection You Need: Mid-range territory. If you're there every other weekend, PPF front end makes sense. If it's a few times a year thing, a ceramic coating is probably enough - you'll get the odd chip but nothing crazy.

A ceramic coating actually works well here because these roads are popular so you're dealing with a lot of brake dust and road grime that ceramic makes easier to clean off.

Cat and Fiddle, Peak District

What You're Getting Into: A537 between Macclesfield and Buxton. Second highest road in England, good views, twisty. Close to home if you're in the Midlands.

What Happens to Your Paint: Exposed moorland means weather from every direction. Road surface is decent.

What Protection You Need: A ceramic coating works well here. Weather exposure means your paint deals with constant water and dirt. Ceramic makes maintenance easier - water sheets off instead of causing water spots.

PPF is overkill unless you're there multiple times a week. But proper ceramic coating keeps your car cleaner between washes.

Cotswolds Loop - Various A and B Roads

What You're Getting Into: Nice driving roads throughout the area. A429, A44, various B roads. Smooth tarmac, gentle curves, countryside. Less about pushing hard, more about enjoying the drive.

What Happens to Your Paint: Not much. Well-maintained roads, good surfaces. Some mud from farm vehicles and usual road dirt. Maybe tree sap if you park wrong.

What Protection You Need: Ceramic coating is perfect. You don't need PPF - roads are too smooth for serious chips. Ceramic makes your car look good and washing easier when you get tree sap or bird mess.

East Midlands to Goodwood

What You're Getting Into: If you're in the East Midlands (Nottingham, Leicester, Derby), getting down to Goodwood for events is common. Mostly A roads and motorway. A1, M25, A3, A27. Not exciting but important for shows or track days.

What Happens to Your Paint: Motorway bombardment. Hours at speed collecting debris. Small stones, bugs, road dirt. Not dramatic but constant exposure.

What Protection You Need: Ceramic coating proves itself here. Motorway driving is about keeping paint clean from constant small stuff:

  • Bugs wash off easier
  • Road grime doesn't stick
  • Your car looks good at Goodwood
  • Washing takes less time

PPF on the front end isn't bad if you're doing this regularly. But ceramic coating is the workhorse for this kind of driving.

Quick plug: We're based in the East Midlands and do this journey regularly for clients. Mobile service means we sort your car before you go or detail it when you're back. We come to you.

Atlantic Highway, Devon & Cornwall

What You're Getting Into: A39 along the North Devon and Cornwall coast. Coastal road with cliff views. Smooth in sections, narrow in others.

What Happens to Your Paint: Salt spray everywhere, especially when it's windy. Narrow sections with hedges, and beach car parks with sand blasting paint.

What Protection You Need: Ceramic coating minimum for salt protection. If you're doing coastal drives regularly, ceramic helps with corrosion risk and easier salt removal.

PPF on lower panels if you're doing beach trips often - sand from car parks can damage lower door sills.

Reality Check on Protection Costs

PPF is expensive. Full front end is usually £1,500-2,500. Full vehicle is £4,000-6,000+.

Ceramic coating is more like £500-1,000 for proper prep and application.

Think about what you're actually doing:

  • Regular mountain/highland driving? PPF front end
  • Mostly motorways and A roads? Ceramic coating
  • Mix of everything? Ceramic coating now, add PPF later if needed
  • Occasional spirited drive? Keep your car clean and accept some wear

We're not trying to sell everyone PPF - it's overkill for most driving. But think about what makes sense for how you actually use your car.

Post-Drive Care

Washing your car after a proper drive matters. Salt, bugs, road grime - leaving that sitting on paint causes damage, protected or not.

Mobile detailing makes this easier. You get back late and don't want to wash your car. We'll sort it the next day while you're back to your schedule.

Worth It?

These routes are good. If you've got a fun car, getting out on proper roads makes ownership worthwhile.

Get protection sorted before you go, not after. Easier than fixing damage later.

Xperior Detailing provides mobile ceramic coatings and paint protection services across the East Midlands and London. We prep cars before trips and restore them after.
