Engine bay cleaning in Leicester

Leicester's tree-lined streets and parks drop a lot of leaves, and plenty end up in your car — in the scuttle panel under the windscreen, where the drains are. Blocked drains there are a common cause of water getting into the cabin, so a proper engine bay clean includes clearing them.

The part of the bay most people never see

The scuttle panel is the plastic tray at the base of the windscreen. It collects leaves, seeds and grit, and beneath it are drains that let rainwater out. When they block, water backs up, and on many cars it can find its way into the footwells or onto electronics.

The leaves and debris are cleared from the scuttle and the drains checked to make sure they're running, along with the channels and seals around the bonnet. It takes minutes, and it's one of the most useful things you can have done to a car that's parked under trees.

Then the rest of the bay gets the full process: electrics covered, degreaser worked in by brush, low-pressure rinse, compressed-air dry, and a non-greasy dressing on the plastics and hoses.

Engine Bay Cleaning in Leicester: questions

My footwell is wet — could it be blocked drains?+

It's one of the common causes, especially on a car parked under trees. Blocked scuttle drains let rainwater back up and find a way in. Clearing them may fix it; if it doesn't, a seal or another drain may be at fault and a garage should take a look.

How often should the scuttle drains be cleared?+

Autumn is the time to check, once the leaves have come down. On a car that lives under trees, once or twice a year is sensible.

What's a scuttle panel?+

The plastic panel at the base of the windscreen, under the wipers. It covers the air intake for the cabin and the drains that carry rainwater away.
