Rolls-Royce detailing

A Rolls-Royce is built by hand to a standard most cars never approach, and detailing one is mostly about restraint: knowing which parts must never be polished, which materials can't take water, and how to finish huge panels evenly. We've looked after Ghosts and Dawns inside and out.

What's different about detailing a Rolls-Royce

The coachline

The coachline along the side is painted by hand. It's never machine polished hard or attacked with aggressive products — it's cleaned and protected gently, so the line stays as crisp as the day it was painted.

Lambswool and leather

The interiors use soft, natural leather and, on many cars, deep lambswool rugs. The leather is cleaned with a gentle cleaner and conditioned; the lambswool is brushed and cleaned with minimal moisture, so it stays soft rather than matting.

The grille and brightwork

The grille and brightwork mark easily. They're cleaned with soft brushes and a non-abrasive product — never anything that could leave fine scratches on a surface that's meant to be flawless.

The Spirit of Ecstasy

The figurine retracts into the grille. It's cleaned carefully in place and never forced, and the housing it retracts into is cleared of the grime that collects there.

Huge panels, even finish

Long, flat panels show every inconsistency. Correction and coating are done methodically, panel by panel, under inspection lighting, so the finish is uniform from one end of the car to the other.

Doors, umbrellas and the headliner

Door shuts and hinge areas are cleaned properly on coach-door cars, the umbrella compartments are cleaned and left dry, and a Starlight headliner, where fitted, is only ever cleaned dry and with great care.

Rolls-Royce detailing: questions

Do you clean lambswool mats?+

Yes. They're vacuumed and brushed to lift the pile, then spot-cleaned with as little moisture as possible so they stay soft. Soaking lambswool is what makes it mat and stiffen.

Will you polish over the coachline?+

No. The coachline is hand-painted and is never machine polished aggressively. It's cleaned and protected by hand.

Is ceramic coating worth it on a Rolls-Royce?+

On a car with this much paint, it makes keeping the finish perfect far easier — and on dark colours, which show every mark, it's the best way to keep it looking right between details.
